Operator Profile
Ken
and Sue Maidment of Treks Across Australia, 4 x 4 ‘Tours
with a difference’ have lived in the country all their lives.
Ken was born in Bordertown, SA in 1952 and Sue in Broken Hill,
NSW in 1958. Ken and Sue currently live in the little town of Serviceton
in Victoria’s West Wimmera region.
They started travelling and enjoying Australia’s
wonderful outback in 1976, and started running tours part time
in 1986. When
not touring, Ken was busy operating his successful pump and water
well drilling business, which he has owned for 30 years. In 1998
Treks Across Australia was formed, which takes Ken and Sue to remote
parts of Australia conducting tag-along tours.
After leaving school Ken’s first paid job
was as a shearer. Soon after he decided that he would like to fix
windmills for the farming community in and around Serviceton. This
soon turned out to be a thriving business not only repairing windmills,
but pumps of all descriptions, and in 1980 became a fully qualified
water well driller holding licences in both SA and Victoria.
After
leaving school Sue worked for the South Australian Police Department
in a secretarial position for 8 years. She left there
to become a mother in 1981 and now Sue and Ken have two adult sons. Sue did not go back to full time work of any sort, but
helped Ken out as much as she could with the business.
Living in a small town has its drawbacks one would
think. But Ken and Sue have always been busy on one committee or
another in
and around Serviceton. Ken has been involved with the local Fire
Brigade for many years, holding positions as Lieutenant and Captain.
Has been a Scout Assistant Leader, President of the Hall Committee
and Vice President of the Historic Railway Station, as well as
being a Zone Leader for Neighbourhood Watch when it was started
in the area.
Sue has been involved with kindergarten and school
committees since the children started school. Has played tennis
for Serviceton
and held positions as Secretary/Treasurer for a number of years
and was a Committee member of the Serviceton Centenary Committee.
She is a member of Leeor Rural Fire Brigade and previously held position of Secretary / Treasurer for 9 years.
